Free Money. No, Really! This time… maybe!! (Actually, it is a tax refund.)

If it says “free money” it is a scam. Whether through text, email, Facebook, they are always trying to get our money or personal information. Use caution; if it seems too good to be true or if anybody is trying to get you to share information, ASK A FRIEND or call our office. Do not fall for it!

But seriously, this time maybe there is a chance at an unexpected cash infusion — a refund.

If you live, OR WORK, or both in the city of Kansas City, Missouri, your income is subject to a one percent (1%) earnings tax. This tax is automatically deducted out of your paycheck and sent to the city of Kansas City by the employer. The tax has a long history but basically the city says even those that do not live in Kansas City should pay the tax if they work in Kansas City because they are benefiting from city infrastructure. Live in Overland Park but work downtown and you pay!

COVID changed everything! If you lived outside of Kansas City, Missouri (think Gladstone, MO or Johnson County, KS) but worked in Kansas City pre-COVID and now work from home, or if you worked from home during any part of this last year, the city of Kansas City owes you a refund! The city of Kansas City can only collect if you worked inside of the city. Working from home, if your home is not inside the city, you can get your money back.

All you need to do is download form: RD-109NR (simply Google “RD-109NR Kansas City” and it is the top result. If you cannot find the form give our office a call (913)385-9400 and we can mail or email you a copy.). Fill out the form and send it in to Kansas City.

Be in the giving spirit; share this wonderful news with your friends and family. Perhaps you can help get them their own special “stimulus check.”
